Automated flight modes are useful, but they should sit on top of basic manual competence. Every pilot should be able to recover orientation, land safely, and understand what the aircraft will do when GPS, signal, or battery conditions change.
ORIENTATION IS EVERYTHING
Practice low, slow, and close. Learn how the controls feel with the aircraft facing away, sideways, and toward you. Then practice controlled rectangles, circles, altitude changes, and smooth yaw. Know the Return to Home altitude and behavior before you depend on it. A pilot who understands orientation can recover from situations that automation cannot solve for them.

BEFORE TAKEOFF
U.S. rules depend on the purpose of the flight. Recreational flying is a limited statutory exception; most non-recreational operations fall under Part 107.
RECREATIONAL DOES NOT MEAN RULE-FREE
FAA guidance requires recreational flyers to take and pass TRUST and carry proof while flying. Recreational drones weighing 250 g or more must be registered. Drones that are required to be registered must comply with Remote ID unless operating under an applicable exception such as within a FRIA. Pilots must follow airspace requirements and maintain visual line of sight.

READY TO FLY
Small maintenance habits prevent a surprising number of crashes, cancelled shoots, corrupted files, and battery problems.
Replace cracked, chipped, bent, or stressed propellers instead of trying to squeeze one more flight out of them.
Read release notes and update with time to test the aircraft afterward—not five minutes before a paid job.
Follow the manufacturer’s storage, temperature, charging, and transport guidance. Stop using swollen or damaged batteries.
Back up footage, format in-camera when appropriate, and keep a spare card in the case.
Wind speed, gusts, temperature, visibility, sun angle, and precipitation all affect safe flight and image quality.
Do not assume yesterday’s Return to Home settings are correct for today’s trees, terrain, buildings, and takeoff point.
