State Troopers in Alaska now Use Drones for Search and Rescue

With a total of 736,081, Alaska is the least populous state in the United States.

They come in helpful in situations where the AST is required to supervise an operation of search and rescue. Alaska is famous for its amazing outdoors activities such as paddling, hiking and watching wildlife.
However, these activities frequently result in the need for rescue and search missions. With off-road vehicles and air support and air support, the AST has become an example of how rescue and search operations are conducted.
According to the AST’s website, “Troopers conduct over four hundred fifty SAR operations every all year.” Sometimes it is the case that helicopters, and manned ground vehicles aren’t enough to accomplish the job. This is why the AST is now using drones to aid officers on searches and rescue operations. With drones AST agents have the ability to find missing people without having to risk their lives.
Drones are able to access areas that ground-based or manned aircrafts simply cannot. It can be located in a cliff or mountain or under thick forest foliage or hidden within floating icebergs. However, due to the limited number of personnel and drones there are a few AST officers are able to use drone technology in all hours of the day.
If the AST requires the deployment of drones, but lacks an access point, occasionally time they’ll call the assistance from U.A. Fairbank’s Alaska Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration (ACUASI) program. The ACUASI program began in 2001, at a time when drones were being employed by the military.
The studies conducted there resulted in ACUASI the ideal site for an official Federal Aviation Administration drone test location. According to the ACUASI website, the organization’s goal is to “Develop the ability to test, develop and eventually exploit the latest technologies for unmanned aircraft and their applications to generate positive social and economic impact in The State of Alaska.”
The center conducts experiments across the state using a broad variety of drones. The experiments test how drones perform in extreme weather conditions, different payload capacities and the BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) procedures, as well as other scientific research.
“Our principal goal is to integrate safely unmanned aircraft systems into national airspace. That means getting unmanned aircraft into tasks that currently pose dangers to human pilots” explained Cathy Cahill, the director of ACUASI.
Cahill went on to say that, while they’re mostly dedicated to research and development, ACUASI can always assist Alaska. “We are an asset for the State of Alaska asset really,” she said. “so, when there’s any way, we can help people in need and help them, we’ll do our best to.
We don’t receive many calls however when we need to, if it’s for life and limb, health check, or anything else to protect individuals within their community ACUASI can be there.” By working together and using drones and drones, both the AST and ACUASI ensure that Alaska is equipped with the resources to safeguard, serve and enhance technology.
